Careers at Hendersons Legal

We’re a small Melbourne CBD law firm, we’re growing, and we’d like to hear from you.

If you’re looking at law firm careers in Melbourne, this page is for you. We aren’t advertising one particular vacancy today, but we’d rather meet good lawyers now than start from scratch when the right role opens.

Hendersons Legal has acted for Melbourne businesses, families and individuals since 2001. Have a look at how the firm works first, then send us your cover letter and CV. We keep them on file and get in touch when there’s a fit.

The lawyers we’d like to hear from

If you’ve been searching for commercial litigation, property or construction lawyer jobs in Melbourne, these are the three areas where we most want to grow. You’d be working on real matters for businesses, owners, builders and landlords.

Commercial litigation lawyers

We act for businesses, families and individuals in contract, consumer law, partnership, shareholder and franchising disputes, and in debt collection and insolvency matters. Our litigation lawyers act in VCAT, the Magistrates’ Court, the County Court and the Supreme Court, from the first letter of demand through to appeal.

Property lawyers

Our property lawyers handle residential and commercial conveyancing, including contract and Section 32 review, settlements and PEXA. They also advise tenants and landlords on commercial leasing, and owners corporations and lot owners on levies, by-laws and owners corporation disputes.

Building and construction lawyers

We act for builders, contractors and trades, and for home owners and investors. The work covers building contracts, payment claims, variations, defects and delay claims, and disputes at VCAT. Melissa Henderson spent over five years running a home extension building company, so you’d work with someone who understands how builders think.

Work in another area? Lawyers in wills and estates, debt collection and insolvency, business and commercial law or owners corporation matters are welcome to send a CV too.

Why build your law career at a small firm

Hendersons Legal is a boutique firm in the Melbourne CBD, so you work closely with the people who run it.

Mentoring from David

You work directly with David Henderson, the firm’s principal, and he mentors you on real matters as they come in.

Your own files

You run your own files and deal with clients from early on, so you see matters through from start to finish.

Paid CPD and training

The firm pays for your CPD and training, and we’ll work out with you which skills are worth building next.

A modern cloud practice

We run on Smokeball practice management, InfoTrack searches, electronic signing and PEXA for conveyancing. Files, searches, signing and settlements are handled online, so less of your day goes on paper shuffling.

David Henderson, principal of Hendersons Legal

David Henderson set up Hendersons Legal in 2001 and still runs it. He’s the person you’d work with most closely.

In the office, together. We work from our Melbourne CBD office five days a week. We believe in a collaborative, friendly workplace, and you learn far more sitting alongside the lawyers you work with than you ever will on a video call. Roles can be full-time, or part-time on reduced days.

What we look for in a lawyer

We welcome lawyers at every stage of their career. The work we have in mind suits junior to mid-level lawyers who want to run their own files. Skills matter more than years, so if this sounds like you, send us your CV.

  • You hold, or are eligible to hold, a Victorian practising certificate.

  • You keep your files organised and your deadlines in view.
  • You’re comfortable using cloud-based practice software, or keen to learn.

Questions about working with us

Can I apply if I’m still completing supervised legal practice?

Yes. Our principal, David Henderson, can supervise lawyers who are still completing supervised legal practice, in line with the Legal Services Board’s requirements. Tell us in your cover letter where you’re up to.

Do you offer part-time roles?

Yes. Roles can be full-time or part-time on reduced days, and part-time lawyers are in the office on the days they work. Tell us in your application which suits you.

Do your lawyers work in the office?

Yes, five days a week in our Melbourne CBD office. We want a collaborative, friendly workplace, and you learn far more when you can turn to a colleague and ask, especially early in your career.

I practise in a different area. Can I still apply?

Yes. We’re mainly growing in commercial litigation, property, and building and construction, but we’re happy to hear from lawyers in our other areas too.

What should I include in my cover letter?

Tell us about the work you do now or want to do, which of our areas interest you, your practising certificate status, and whether you want full-time or part-time work. A page is plenty. You can list referees, but we’ll only contact them with your consent, so please let them know you’ve listed them.

How long will you keep my application?

We keep it on file for 12 months and then securely delete it, unless you join the firm. If you’d like it deleted sooner, just let us know.
